Pengantar

Introduction

“Jungle of Sounds” is a response to the transmigration issue that has begun since the 70s in Nabire. Starting from Girimulyo, the initial settlement of transmigrants in the urban area which was built in 1974, transmigrants from Java, NTB and Bali island, came successively to live in a stretch of area along the east and west: from Legare in the east to Yaro in the west.

Transmigrants came not just from areas outside of Papua. There were also local people who came from the mountainous regions of Papua, they were referred to as translokal, a short word of local transmigrants.

Together with transmigrants from Java, NTB and Bali, they pioneered the town on the swamp area which at that time were landfilled before being used to build houses and new lives through agriculture.

Eventually, their stories are important in the effort of tracking the development of Nabire City from various aspects. Through their childhood lives, games, food, objects, as well as the natural environment that supported their livelihood in that area, the development of Nabire city can be traced through the personal experiences of this people who pioneered the town on this swamp area.
